ANA reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said it would embark on a march on Tuesday to the Lily Gold Mine to hand over a memorandum of grievances.
Joining it will be members of the ANC, labour federation Cosatu and the SA Communist Party (SACP) in Barberton, Mpumalanga. The march follows the Cosatu march to the mine on Sunday, when the federation put pressure on management to “find” the three trapped mineworkers. Cosatu also said it wanted the government to establish a commission of inquiry into the mine disaster on 5 February 2016, which left three mineworkers tapped underground. The NUM listed seven demands to management, among them that work on an incline shaft to rescue the three trapped workers should begin within three days. Other demands are that all the mine’s employees be paid their full outstanding salaries with immediate effect and that the mine must comply with the requirements of the Mining Charter such as a Social & Labour Plan.
