BDLive reports that Peter Bailey, a senior National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) official who is also an ANC member, appears to have joined a number of disgruntled party members who are standing as independent candidates in the coming municipal elections.
Bailey is the union’s chief negotiator and also acts as its chairman of health and safety. There are longstanding strong ties between the NUM, a staunch affiliate of labour federation Cosatu, and the ANC. Bailey is expected to stand as an independent candidate in ward two in Cillie, a small town in the Northern Cape, following an ANC list process in the province viewed as problematic by disgruntled members. NUM general secretary David Sipunzi commented: "The NUM will be very much worried if Peter has done such a thing. Although he has a right, as a high official of NUM, we would expect him to behave differently."
