harmonyNetwerk24 reports that an investigation is underway at the Phakisa gold mine near Welkom after an employee of the Harmony Gold group was killed in an underground train accident on Saturday.

All underground transport has been suspended.  Earlier this year a worker was also killed at the mine in a rock fall.  Monyatso oa Mahlatsi, labour federation Cosatu’s Free State provincial secretary, warned Harmony in a statement to improve its safety procedures.  He said:  “We make a clarion call that Harmony should implement the slogan which they have so boldly written in the entrances of their shafts that 'no job is so important that it cannot be done safely' by taking all the necessary steps to create a safe working environment for the mineworkers.  Mahlatsi added that the “fatal incident of one mineworker is one death too many.”
