Fin24 reports that labour unions have asked President Jacob Zuma to make good on a promise to cap the salaries of high income earners, accusing business of not cooperating with them to improve economic conditions.
In their written submission to a meeting of the Presidential Labour Working Group at the Union Buildings on Tuesday, trade union representatives said: “We need to revisit the notion of a package to raise the incomes of those at the bottom, combined with a freeze on the salaries of high income earners.” They said a new wage policy should address the wage inequality in the economy. The workers’ leaders had strong words for Zuma, saying the government hadn’t followed through on economic policies and lacked clarity on what has happened to some of the ANC’s promises. The unions also said business was not doing its bit in helping to keep the economy afloat.
