Mining Review Africa reports that according to a statement put out by the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (Amcu), eight National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members have been arrested by the SAPS at Northam Platinum’s Zonderinde hostel.
The arrests are said to be in connection with the “brutal murder” of Amcu’s member Thembinkosi Mhlabeni on 6 June 2016. The arrestees apparently appeared at the Northam Platinum Magistrates Court on 24 June 2016 for the murder and were denied bail by the court. Amcu said it condemned any worker who used violence against other worker and leaders that slandered other union leaders because they belonged to another union.
