EWN reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has rejected the 7% salary increase offered by power utility Eskom, saying it wouild go back to the negotiating table next week and would accept nothing less than 10%.
The union's Paris Mashego said that, despite salary increases being suspended for Eskom executive directors, the NUM believed they would get pay hikes, but only after a wage increase has been settled for the workers. He commented: “The minister has just suspended that (increases for executive directors) and we think it’s to remove pressure from wage negotiations because a 3.9% for the non-executive (directors) has been awarded. It’s going to happen after negotiations or early next year, that’s how the minister operates and we know that strategy.”
