The mining houses are holding their collective breath over whether this year will be a repeat of 2014 when there was a five-month stalemate with the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (Amcu), which is the majority union in the sector.

By demanding increases of up to 20%, David Sipunzi, general secretary of the rival National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), has made good on a promise earlier in the year to seek an increases above the inflation rate.  But, he has been was more conciliatory in respect of the negotiations, saying the NUM wouldn’t want to stress mining companies further and that it was facing up to reality.

On the other hand, the ever-growing Amcu believes that mining companies are still making substantial profits, despite the worldwide slump in commodity prices and it is demanding a R12,500 per month basic wage for the lowest-paid workers, which equates to a 47% increase.
