EWN writes that local government’s response to the 2014 farmworkers' strike is in spotlight in the Witzenberg Municipality. The build-up to the local government election activities took place in Witzenberg on Monday.
According to the Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu), the municipality didn’t do enough to assist workers during the wage strikes and it furthermore claims that wealthy outside forces are influencing councillors. Fawu’s Mxolisi Mngxunyeni alleges that outside forces have been influencing councillors to in turn prohibit farm workers from striking. But local mayor Bernito Claassen has rubbished Mngxunyeni’s claim.
