Trade union Solidarity issued a press statement on Tuesday indicating that it would do everything in its power to prevent possible retrenchments at Sibanye.
This comes in the wake of reports that around 2,500 jobs at the company’s Cook 4 Operation are in jeopardy. In its report on retrenchments issued earlier this year, Solidarity indicated that approximately 30,000 jobs in the mining industry have come under threat during the past year. That being the case Solidarity would pull out all the stops to prevent more jobs being affected in the industry. Solidarity General Secretary Gideon du Plessis noted that it has come to the union’s attention that many vacancies existed within the Sibanye Group and he encouraged his members working at Cooke 4 “to immediately accept any transfers to another Sibanye mine or shaft, thereby ensuring job security.”
