Cape Times writes that Friday’s Constitutional Court ruling that seven Department of Correctional Services (DCS) employees be promoted and remunerated retrospectively has vindicated those involved.
This is according to one of the co-ordinators who, since 2012, had assisted the DCS employees. On Friday, the court found the department had unfairly discriminated against coloureds who were denied employment on the basis of the national employment equity targets. Coloureds make up the majority of the Western Cape population. The co-ordinator, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisal, said Solidarity was the only union willing to take on the case. “The other unions refused to assist. Even the ones these people belonged to,” he claimed. The union argued in its application that the employer only considered national race demographics when effecting the policy.
