BDLive reports that Impala Platinum (Implats) has given Oakbay subsidiary JIC Mining Services three months to open a local bank account or risk losing its business.
JIC found itself without a domestic bank after SA’s four biggest banks ended their relationships with the Gupta family’s Oakbay abruptly, closing its accounts three months ago. On Tuesday, Implats spokesman Johan Theron said their contract with JIC had expired in June, but that it had been granted an extension to continue rendering services. It was difficult to do business with any company that did not have a local bank account, Theron stated. Solidarity general secretary Gideon du Plessis said the union was in talks with Implats for the mining company to insource the 340 JIC workers should the contract not be renewed. The union met with Oakbay on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
