HeraldLive reports that a delayed multimillion-rand upgrade of the Bethelsdorp police station has caused detectives to book off sick due to “unworkable” conditions.
The situation reached boiling point on Thursday when detectives locked about 70 builders out of the police station amid issues of construction delays. Police officials and detectives were seen walking around the station with medical masks while layers of dust covered their tables and computers. A community service centre at the station was also temporarily closed. The R53-million upgrade started in February last year and has been extended until February next year due to ongoing strikes and wage disputes between workers and building contractor Transtruct.
