education blackboard thumb medium80 92City Press reports that the KwaZulu-Natal education department has laid charges of internal misconduct against a Durban principal and provincial leader of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) over the jobs-for-cash scam.

It alleges that Thembekile Makhanya, principal of the Windy Heights Primary School in the city’s Umlazi education circuit, sold a teaching post to an educator, who later blew the whistle on her.  Makhanya’s misconduct hearing will apparently go ahead on 17 August and she is facing several counts relating to the alleged sale of a post to Nkonzwenle “Nkonzo” Mqadi for R12,000.  The charges against Makhanya could result in her being dismissed from the department.   Makhanya has also been suspended by Sadtu.  Sadtu spokesperson Nomarashia Caluza said that she was unaware of any charges.  She indicated that Makhanya’s Sadtu case, which related to allegedly running “parallel” union structures, has not been concluded.
