nelsonmandelabayHeraldLive reports that with a new multi-party government in Nelson Mandela Bay, the contracts of hundreds of support staff who worked as political advisers, ward assistants and cleaners will terminate at the end of this month.

The start of the new council term also automatically disbanded the 60 ward committees, effectively putting a stop to the monthly stipend paid to more than 500 ward committee members.  Acting city boss Johann Mettler said all political appointees were informed last month of the decision to terminate their contracts.  While councillors who are not returning will each receive a three-month payout, the ex gratia payment does not extend to political appointees.
