Business Report writes that close to 1,600 workers in Secunda, Mpumalanga, downed tools on Thursday after the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) could not come to a wage agreement with Sasol.
Jimmy Gama, Amcu’s national treasurer, indicated that workers have several demands, but first and foremost was a monthly salary of R12,500. He went on to say: "The minimum wage currently for workers is R7,300. We are also demanding a housing and transport allowance." Gama noted that the union had been granted a strike certificate by the CCMA and said the strike would continue “until the company presents a plan." A Sasol spokesman said operations were continuing as normal with no impact on production, although its mining unit would be affected.
