Netwerk24 reports that allegations that white pilots “sabotaged” SAA planes and that arrangements for an international flight were altered to suit a pilot’s family have led to the SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) being sued for libel.
Capt. John Harty (retired) claims that Satawu, Nicholas Maziya, the union’s deputy national secretary, and Matthew Ramosie, Satawu aviation co-ordinator, slandered him after he had been questioned by the Hawks last year about various allegations of “sabotage”. This happened shortly after the pilots’ association, of which Harty was the chairman, passed a motion of no confidence in SAA chairperson Dudu Myeni. Harty, who has brought the action in his personal capacity, is firstly claiming R150,000 for statements that Maziya and Ramosie made in the media relating to the flight changes. A second claim of R150,000 relates to information Ramosie provided to the Daily Maverick. The third R150,000 claim relates to an interview Maziya conducted with Eyewitness News when he alleged that Harty was part of a “conspiracy to cause a plane flown by a black pilot to crash”. Maziya also said Harty should be charged with high treason. (Loosely translated from Afrikaans)
