EWN reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called on the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to intensify the fight against illegal mining in the country.
The union says it’s concerned about recent spikes in the illegal activity and the easy access to disused and closed mines. Free State police have confirmed more than 60 illegal miners have died underground in the province since March and more than 1,400 have been arrested. The NUM’s Livhuwani Mamburu said: “As the NUM we strongly condemn illegal mining wherever it’s happening. They must arrest those who have the resources to give these illegal miners money to go and dig gold.”
