amcu thumb medium80 81Ridge Times reports that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) is adamant that it will continue with its strike until Sasol (Mining) meets its wage demands.

Amcu has been up in arms for the past two months, demanding a minimum wage of R12,500 a month, which the company says it cannot meet.  It has signed an agreement providing for a 7% increase, effective from July this year, and a 0.5% increment, effective from January, with Ceppwawu, Solidarity, the NUM and Sacwu.  Sasol decided to end the protracted Amcu strike in October and, according to Alex Anderson of Group Media Relations, informed the Amcu leadership that it would be invoking its legal rights to bring an end to the strike.  He indicated:  “Regrettably, all options to end the strike amicably have been exhausted with no resolution found to end the current impasse with Amcu.”  It is Sasol’s contention that Amcu members are at work, but Amcu says the strike is continuing.  Violence, intimidation and malicious damage of property have been reported since the strike commenced.  Amcu has distanced itself from the violence.
