City Press reports that suspended national police commissioner Riah Phiyega has three weeks left before she has to submit arguments to convince President Jacob Zuma not to fire her.
Phiyega will be challenging the findings of Judge Cornelis Claassen, who headed the board of inquiry that found her unfit to hold office. Last month, Zuma gave Phiyega a month to make additional written representations to him, following the Claassen Board of Inquiry’s report, which found that Phiyega “was indeed not a fit and proper person to have been appointed as the National Commissioner of the SAPS [SA Police Service]”. Phiyega has appointed top Sandton law firm Werksmans to challenge the Claassen findings. She is also challenging the findings of the Farlam commission of inquiry into the 2012 Marikana massacre.
