Business Report writes that Sibanye on Thursday said it planned to retrench about 330 workers at its newly acquired platinum mines as it seeks to eliminate duplicated roles and cut about R800 million in costs at the affected mines.
The company has notified its workers of the impending retrenchments and is set to begin consultations with affected parties. Sibanye spokesperson James Wellsted indicated: “We have initiated the section 189 (i.e. retrenchment notice) in respect of the consolidation of the Rustenburg and Kroondal assets into Sibanye Platinum divisions and the elimination of duplicate structures and roles.” The company expects the consultation process to last two months and has highlighted R800m in costs and operational synergies that need to be realised between the Kroondal and Rustenburg operations to ensure sustainability. The National Union of Mineworkers’ (NUM’s) Livhuwani Mammburu said the reasons advanced by Sibanye were frivolous and he expected the Department of Mineral Resources to intervene to save jobs. Joseph Mathunjwa of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said Sibanye must expect resistance to its retrenchment plans.
