Bloomberg reports that platinum producer Impala Platinum (Implats) has hired Deloitte & Touche to help improve performance at its troubled Rustenburg mines.
The consultancy firm began work last month and would help make Rustenburg safer and more productive, said Gerhard Potgieter, Impala’s acting chief executive. “We need to sort out our Rustenburg operations, which we have for a long time been trying to do, but have not been very successful,” said Potgieter. Deloitte would help improve a number of basic issues such as employee ill health and absenteeism, he indicated. About 1,000 of the mine’s 40,000 employees are off work at any one time.
