ANA reports that Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba had to cancel the opening of the R22 million River Park clinic in Alexandra after a group held a protest and blocked roads around the precinct on Tuesday.
The protesters were from the city's job creation programme Jozi@Work. Mashaba shut down the multi-million rand programme after taking over the city last year, saying it enriched a few members of the ANC patronage network. The protesters, some of them clad in ANC t-shirts, burnt tyres and brought traffic to a halt around the clinic. The city's Jozi@Work programme was designed to allow communities to partner with the city in the delivery of municipal services in their neighbourhoods. It was launched by the previous ANC administration in September 2014. Last week, Jozi@Work workers stormed the council chambers during a sitting and demanded to see Mashaba.
