BusinessLive reports that union federation Cosatu has accepted the proposed national minimum wage (NMW). In February, it pulled out of a NMW wage signing ceremony, citing the need to consult its central executive committee (CEC).
Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali, speaking after a three-day CEC meeting, said on Thursday that, while the proposed R20 an hour minimum did not reach the minimum living standards of an average SA household, "it is a significant starting base". The federation has mandated its leadership to sign the agreement on the minimum wage, adding that the real work would now begin as legislation was drafted to give effect to it. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who led the talks that culminated in the NMW agreement, hailed Cosatu’s "very constructive approach".
