ANA reports that that the National Education Health and Allied Workers' Union (Nehawu) said on Tuesday that it would be convening a national meeting of the Public Social Development sector as part of its final preparations for a nationwide strike next week.
The strike comes as a result of the failure by the Department of Social Development to table meaningful responses to the union’s reasonable demands, since August 2015. Last month, Nehawu mounted a nation-wide protest action where it delivered a memorandum of demands, but a solution to the dispute has not yet been reached. The union is demanding, among other things, the occupation specific dispensation for Social Service Professionals and Occupations, the introduction of a rural allowance, the absorption of unemployed social workers on a permanent basis and a number of other issues. Nehawu also said it would be exploring the possibility of a secondary strike in the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa)
