ANA reports that the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) on Sunday threatened industrial action over Eskom’s plans to close a number of power stations.
Eskom announced last week that five power stations – Hendrina, Kriel, Komati, Grootvlei, and Camden – were to be closed, meaning that at least 6,000 workers’ jobs could be on the line. Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim said the union wanted to place it on record that no consultation had taken place on the matter between the board of Eskom and the trade unions. He indicated that Numsa had been engaging workers on the ground to establish the next course of action and it was also looking to engage with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on this issue. Furthermore, Numsa was consulting lawyers to establish if it had any legal recourse “to deal with the latest onslaught against workers and their families.”
