Mining Weekly reports that no employees reported for the day shift at Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu mine, near Carletonville, on Thursday. The producer said this was in retaliation to the suspension of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) branch leadership.
Harmony had suspended the branch leadership after they encouraged illegal industrial action in the form of a go-slow at the mine on Wednesday, with only 25% of the workforce reporting for duty. The go-slow was in response to the disciplinary procedures against 40 employees, following an illegal sit-in at Kusasalethu in January, when around 1,700 employees had staged a 48-hour wildcat underground sit-in. Harmony CEO Peter Steenkamp said it was of great concern that there have been reports of intimidation of employees, as had been the case in the actions in January.
