TimesLive reports that the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) plans to intensify its strike against the Road Accident Fund (RAF).
The union indicated on Wednesday that further wage negotiations between the parties under the auspices of the CCMA had collapsed. “They rejected our demands without making any offers on the table. All workers at the RAF branches in East London‚ KwaZulu-Natal‚ and Pretoria are gearing up for a complete shutdown of the operations of the RAF nationally‚” said Numsa’s Phakamile Hlubi. He went on to say: “As the crisis grows‚ more and more of them (employees) are joining daily. Ultimately this will result in a national shutdown of the Road Accident Fund.” Numsa’s protracted strike relates to a pay dispute as well as the RAF’s alleged inability to compensate accident victims. RAF CEO Eugene Watson earlier this month labelled Numsa’s wage demands as unsubstantiated‚ unaffordable and unreasonable.
