EWN reports that the Democratic Alliance (DA) is concerned that the number of active police reservists in the Western Cape has declined by 84% since 2008.
In that year, the Western Cape had just over 5,000 active reservists. But a parliamentary reply from the Police Ministry indicated that that number went down to 829 in 2017. There has also been a decline in the number of reservists being called up on a yearly basis from over 22,000 in 2008 to zero this year. The DA said it would be referring the matter to the Provincial Police Ombudsman for investigation.
