News24 reports that wage negotiations between Durban University of Technology (DUT) management and striking staff were unable to reach a conclusion on Friday, despite hopes that they would finalise their talks by the weekend.
"After three days of another mediation process, presided over by the Commissioners from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), negotiations between DUT and three labour unions could not be concluded," DUT spokesperson Alan Khan said on Friday afternoon. Khan said all stakeholders would "report to their principals on Monday" and that all negotiating parties would reconvene again on 7 March. Lectures would resume by Monday. Following the intervention of Deputy Minister for Higher Education Buti Manamela on Tuesday, the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), the National Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) and the Tertiary Education National Union of SA (Tenusa) agreed to reactivate the bargaining process with management after a seven-week strike.
