BL Premium reports that after meeting President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday, Cosatu remained unconvinced that unbundling Eskom was the only viable solution for the embattled state-owned power utility.
The labour federation met Ramaphosa and a number of ministers following countrywide protests last week against government’s plan to split Eskom into three separate entities comprising generation, transmission and distribution. The move to unbundle was met with anger by organised labour across the board, with fears that it would lead to mass job losses and privatisation. Cosatu, which is in alliance with the governing ANC, also complained of not being consulted about the decision. The organisation’s general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said: “We are not convinced that the unbundling is the only option for government. We are of the view that unbundling will not solve the issues Eskom has, such as lack of skills and the high levels of debt.” He also expressed some skepticism that there would be no job losses or privatisation at some future stage. Cosatu affiliates and officials will debate the unbundling decision at a three-day central executive committee (CEC) meeting that starts next Monday.
