ramaphosa2The Star reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa has officially proclaimed Wednesday, 8 May 2019 as the day on which the general elections will be held.  

In a statement, the Presidency said Ramaphosa had dissolved the National Assembly and that the election date had now been published in the Government Gazette.  “The president has also, in terms of Section 2A of the Public Holidays Act of 1994, declared May 8, 2019, a public holiday,” the Presidency indicated.  To date, 26,765,886 South Africans have been recorded as registered voters.  The proclamation has also triggered the opening of the candidate nomination process for the upcoming elections, with the closing date to be included in the election timetable.
