The Department of Labour has issued a press statement to caution the public to be on alert about a new scam which makes an assertion that persons who worked between 1990 and 2019 have rights to get financial benefits.
The department said it had not solicited anyone to come forward to receive “any so-called benefits”. The scammers have apparently been using social media platforms to entice members of the public to access so-called benefits due to them. The tagline used by the scammers to entice and scam the public falsely reads: “The workers who worked between the 1990 and 2019, have the rights to get the benefits of $R30.000 by Department of Labour of South Africa”. The scammers have moreover created an online link where members of the public will supposedly be advised how to withdraw the so-called benefits after answering a set of questions to establish whether they qualified. The department urged members of the public not to share their personal information with social media platforms run from “dingy places”. It also emphasised that its suite of services were offered free of charge.
