protestGroundUp reports that about 80 people occupied the ground floor of the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) Cape Town office on Wednesday demanding that Minister of Transport Blade Nzimande fix the commuter rail system.

The protest came days after 17-year-old Simo Maninginingi Kwepe was killed on a Metrorail line near Salt River station on Friday.  "It's unacceptable that lives are being lost.  Enough, Prasa.  Enough of your corruption.  Enough of completely ignoring the plight of people on the ground," said Mandy-Lynne Mott of #UniteBehind.  The activist group announced that its members would commence a hunger strike on 26 April, which also marks the 25th anniversary of the first democratic elections in 1994.  Prasa Western Cape regional head Richard Walker accepted the group's memorandum on behalf of the board, but was not permitted to address the crowd.  The protesters proceeded to march to the ANC’s Western Cape office to speak to the party’s provincial elections leader Ebrahim Rasool.  #UniteBehind indicated that it had sent a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa on 10 April and were promised a response by 16 April, which they had still not yet received.  Rasool met with some of the protesters and promised to escalate their letter to the president.  He also said he was open to engaging further.
