Sibanye StillwaterBloomberg reports that about 1,800 workers were trapped underground at a Sibanye-Stillwater platinum mine after an incident in the shaft, the precious metals producer said on Tuesday afternoon.

The company might use an adjacent shaft to hoist the workers to the surface, although there was currently no estimate for when that might happen, a spokesman said.  Some rails being transported underground fell down the shaft and have blocked it, spokesman James Wellsted indicated.  There were no injuries as a result of the accident.  The workers entered the mine on Tuesday morning and the incident happened around lunch time, when the miners would normally be ending their shift, Wellsted said.  Sibanye was assessing the shaft infrastructure, which might take a couple of hours, he advised.
