Engineering News reports that the Automotive Manufacturers Employers’ Association (Ameo) has signed a new three-year wage agreement with the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa).
Ameo represents SA’s seven automotive manufacturers, namely BMW, Ford, Isuzu, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Toyota and Volkswagen. This was the third time negotiations within the vehicle manufacturing industry were concluded without industrial action. The agreed wage increase will be effected retrospectively from 1 July. Hourly associates will receive a 9% increase in the first year, and for the second and third years they will receive an increase in line with the consumer price index, or 7%, whichever is greater. Ameo’s spokesperson Andile Dlamini commented that the successful conclusion of wage and conditions of employment negotiations for the next three years created a platform for much-needed stability in the motor industry. The industry employed 87,777 people directly and an additional 380,725 people indirectly in the supply chain, making it a critical industrial employer, noted Dlamini.
