capetown thumb100 BL Premium writes that SA’s hotel industry on the brink as operators struggle to justify opening their establishments amid the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

A number of countries have halted all flights to SA because of concerns around variant strains of the virus that have been found in the country as well as the relatively slow vaccination rollout. SA, with a population of about 60-million, is only n the first phase of vaccinations, which is targeting 1.25-million health-care workers. It is said that government needs to provide a conclusive plan to save SA’s travel and hospitality industry, or local tourism will continue to be battered by the pandemic and the slow vaccination response. The likes of the Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank in Johannesburg may never reopen. Some hotels in Sandton are converting space to residential uses. Event venues such as the Sandton Convention Centre and Gallagher Estate haven’t reopened either in 2021 because gatherings are highly limited under Covid-19 prevention restrictions. Listed hospitality group Tsogo Sun has been hard hit by the effects of the pandemic, with the owner of Southern Sun Hyde Park and Southern Sun Montecasino expecting the recovery of the hospitality industry to be slow due to uncertainties around the health of travellers and the negative economic impact of the pandemic on the government, corporates and individuals.
