News24 reports that ANC staff members have vowed not to accept any decision taken by the party that would result in employees losing their jobs at Luthuli House.
They remain concerned by remarks that were made by the ANC's treasurer-general (TG), Paul Mashatile, that retrenchments were imminent to ease the burden on the party's budget and financial woes. "It has been the view by the TG. But our attitude towards that view is very clear. We do not accept that. We do not accept any retrenchment threat so that we keep quiet from raising our issues, we will not keep quiet because we threatened by retrenchments," one staffers warned. On Tuesday after picketing outside the ANC's office in Johannesburg to express their frustrations, staffers handed a memorandum to the party's deputy secretary-general, Jessie Duarte, with a list of their pressing concerns. They said they would intensify their protests if the party did not respond to their demands within the given time period. Apparently, the staffers agreed with Duarte that employees would have to be consulted first if the party intended to retrench workers. Duarte told the employees outside Luthuli House that the cash flow challenges the party faced were as a result of a variety of factors. "If we do need to retrench, this will be done after consultation with the staff representatives as the labour law prescribes," Duarte stated. Meanwhile, the ANC said it was looking into all the concerns raised by workers and it had resolved to meet with them within the coming week.
