News24 reports that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has revealed that 11 SA Police Service (SAPS) officers have been dismissed from service for cases relating to rape, corruption and death due to police action.
The unit also managed to secure 22 criminal convictions involving 29 police officers. The highest sentence secured was 25 years behind bars. Other sentences were between 10 to 18 years for cases related to death as a result of police action, rape by police officers, and corruption. This was revealed in IPID’s annual report for the 2020/21 financial year, which was released on Friday. According to the police watchdog, 2,468 investigations were completed between 2020 and 2021, with a total of 106 disciplinary convictions involving 169 police officers. IPID indicated in the report that the investigation of high impact cases – including corruption, systemic corruption, torture, death in police custody, death as a result of police action, rape by police officer, and rape in police custody – had been prioritised. "The assault cases constitute about 70% of our workload; these cases were also prioritised in order to reduce the backlog," it stated.
