petrolpumpNews24 reports that four police officers in North West have been arrested in connection some 300 counts of alleged fraud.

The officers were arrested on Tuesday alongside two petrol attendants working in Coligny. The officers are accused of colluding with the petrol attendants between January and December 2020 to defraud the SA Police Service (SAPS) by benefitting from irregular transactions on state petrol cards. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani noted: "It is alleged that the members… [used] state-owned motor vehicles' fuel cards to pay for fuel that was never filled in the said vehicles. They would then claim cash amounts and share it among themselves. Subsequent to these irregularities, investigations were conducted, and it led to the arrest of these members, aged 43 to 56." Some of the fraudulent transactions were made while vehicles were at a SAPS garage for repairs. The two petrol attendants have agreed to become state witnesses, said Funani, who added that investigation into the matter was underway and more arrests were imminent.
