toyotaMoneyweb reports that the torrential rains that have been battering KwaZulu-Natal have led to Toyota SA Motors (TSAM) suspending production at its manufacturing plant at Prospecton south of Durban because of flooding.

The group confirmed on Wednesday that its production plant experienced flooding in areas due to the heavy rains in the province. “TSAM’s operations have therefore been suspended since Monday evening while efforts geared towards a safe start-up (after water has been cleared) are in place,” it indicated. TSAM spokespersons were unable to indicate when production would resume or quantify the damage caused to the plant. Toyota is the market leader in vehicle sales in SA. The floods have also negatively impacted automotive component suppliers to TSAM and other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Motor Industry Staff Association (Misa) CEO Martlé Keyter said the association was devastated by the impact the floods in Durban and the surrounding areas would have on the retail motor industry, which was still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Keyter, the flooding could not have struck the retail motor industry at a worse time. “The motor retail industry can’t afford more retrenchments with the unemployment rate at 35.3%. Misa’s more than 53,000 members are dependent on motor vehicle and component sales, vehicle services and repair work,” she pointed out.
