Sibanye StillwaterFin24 reports that a sit-in staged by workers underground at Sibanye-Stillwater's Kroondal mine appears to be losing steam as just 31 workers now remain below the surface.

Late on Tuesday, the company said 211 aggrieved workers had staged a sit-in at the Kwezi shaft at the Kroondal platinum group metals (PGM) mine over an employee share option scheme. The Monday night shift at another Kroondal shaft, known as K9, was disrupted by 250 workers who had gathered on the surface. Those protesters were prevented from accessing underground and have since dispersed. Operations continue at the other shafts at the mine. The protest action comes after annual payments were made to beneficiaries of Sibanye’s Rustenburg and Marikana employee share option schemes (ESOPs) on 1 June. Kroondal employees are not yet party to a share option scheme pending the finalisation of a transaction for Sibanye to acquire 50% of the mine from Anglo American Platinum. On Wednesday morning, Geoffrey Moatshe of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said only male workers remained underground and only two were NUM members. He said the bulk of those underground belong to the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), the majority union at Kroondal. AMCU’s Phuthuma Manyathi described the developments as "very unfortunate" and said the sit-in was not authorised by the unions. It has yet to be determined if anyone was held underground against their will.
