News24 reports that KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) teacher unions have raised serious concerns about escalating crime on school premises and have called on the education department to beef up security.
The outcry follows a series of violent incidents, including murder, robbery and a stabbing, which took place at KZN schools this week. Dudu Khumalo, 46, a Grade R teacher at Phikiswayo Primary in Ntuzuma, was shot dead on Monday. Also on Monday, a 21-year-old matric pupil, at Isihlahla Senkosi High School in Nongoma, was stabbed and killed after he allegedly attacked other pupils. On Tuesday in KwaMashu, a group of teachers at Mukelani Primary School was left traumatised after they were robbed of their personal belongings by criminals on the premises. The teachers were also forced to transfer funds to the criminals via their cellphones. Nomarashiya Caluza of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) said concerns around pupil and staff safety had consistently been raised, but without any action. Thirona Moodley of the National Professional Teachers' Organisation of SA pointed out that school safety was the most significant issue that had to be tackled. According to Moodley, numerous calls had been made to the department to address this issue, but they had fallen on deaf ears. KZN Education MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, said the department would work closely with law enforcement authorities to bring those responsible to justice swiftly. According to Hlomuka, measures were being taken to enhance policing at Mukelani Primary School and other schools in the region to prevent such incidents from recurring.
