News24 reports that Roodepoort resident Mathews Byana was shot twice and wounded as warring illegal miners (zama zamas) opened fire on each other on Monday night.
Chaos erupted outside the 62-year-old’s home, about 50 metres from an illegal mineshaft in Sol Plaatje informal settlement. "It felt like a dream, but it [became] real [when] the first shot hit me in the arm. I realised that somebody was shooting outside. I then fell on the ground for my safety," Byana said. He was taken to hospital and was discharged on Tuesday. The shooting left him with a bullet wound in his arm and four stitches on his head. His home, bed and cupboards were left with several bullet holes. "I've lived here for over 12 years, and this is the first time I've experienced something like this. It was hell," Byana said. Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni and a large contingency of officers conducted a raid at the mineshaft on Tuesday as part of Operation Shanela. During the raid, officers recovered several mining equipment including pumps, pendukas (hand-cracked mineral separation machines), shovels and pickaxes. Mthombeni emphasised that their efforts were making significant inroads into combating illegal mining. Earlier during the operation, seven vehicles – four vans with tampered engines, two sedans and one small vehicle – were impounded at a roadblock on Impala Road in Roodepoort. Mthombeni said the operation also netted 26 undocumented foreign nationals.
