Press Statement dated 18 September 2018

The PSA has noted with concern, reports of plans by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to retrench workers as part of cost-cutting processes.

The proposal comes in the wake of years of financial mismanagement and questionable policy decisions by those at the helm of the state broadcaster.

“It is unacceptable that employees must be punished for prolonged poor management. Job losses at a time when the country is in a technical recession, will put further pressure on the country’s growth rate. It will impact not only the employees but also their families who rely on these salaries,” says PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks.

“The PSA is outraged that SABC employees now face being without a job by the end of the year as a direct result of financial and human resources decisions taken by its former chief operating officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng. The PSA calls on the Minister of Communications, Nomvula Mokonyane, to ensure that all SABC employees’ rights and interests are protected. All alternatives should be exhausted with proper and transparent engagement with those affected before such drastic measures can be considered,” said Mr Fredericks.
