Press Statement dated 21 September 2018
The Public Servants Association (PSA) took Department of National Health and Department of Public Works to Labour Court regarding the occupation of an unsafe building at Civitas Building in Pretoria.
The matter at Labour Court between Public Servants Association (PSA) and Department of National Health and Department of Public Works over the contravention of the Occupational Health and Safety Act at the Civitas Building which is occupied by National Health employees has been postponed to 11-12 October 2018.
The PSA took National Health and Public Works to Labour Court arguing that workers cannot continue to work in unsafe working environment and the building must be shutdown. Judge van Niekerk presiding over the matter questioned whether the labour court has jurisdiction over the matter. The judge has postponed the matter and requested that parties address him on the jurisdiction of labour court to close down a building.
“The PSA representing the majority of employees stationed at Civitas Building is confident that labour court has jurisdiction and has a strong argument why the building must be shutdown,” said PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks.
