Press Statement dated 21 September 2018

The announcement of the stimulus package by the President Cyril Ramaphosa, is in most parts welcomed by the Public Servants Association (PSA).

“The PSA acknowledges the announcement that government will fill 2 200 critical medical post immediately. This is a great step in the right direction considering the state of health services in the country. The shortage of personnel in the public service has adversely compromised service delivery especially in health, education and policing. The President should consider looking to fill vacancies in the education and policing as a matter of urgency,” said PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks.

Most of the ills that the country faces currently is due to the past corruption, mismanagement and poor governance by the leadership in government and now all of that has caught up with government and severely affecting the poor. This plan seems to be trying to address all of that with limited resources. This scourge is a source of job losses and lack of infrastructure development, without holding those responsible for plunging the fiscal into almost total collapse. This stimulus package might eventually end up into the big hole of thuggery and theft.

“The PSA cautions government that restructuring in the Public Service should not include job cuts as that will negatively affect workers whom are already performing extra work owing to funded posts not filled. Any intention to do so will be met with the ultimate resistance from the PSA,” said Mr Fredericks.
