Press Statement dated 16 October 2018
Trade union Solidarity today confirmed that its members at Denel SOC Ltd will officially begin with protest action tomorrow and the trade union will also hand over a memorandum and a petition to the Denel Board.
This comes in the wake of Denel’s earlier announcement that it will be able to pay salaries in October but that the payments of November salaries and of 13th cheques are in jeopardy. The company already struggled to pay managements’ salaries at the end of September.
“It is outrageous that a company often accused of fraudulent financial conduct in the past would expect its workers to simply continue working while not knowing when to expect their next salary cheque,” said Solidarity Deputy General Secretary Johan Botha.
According to Botha, several hundred Denel employees made their voices heard in Solidarity’s online petition and aired their objections with the company and the Denel Board. “These employees now also want to make the company aware of their dissatisfaction through peaceful protest action,” Botha said.
Solidarity members will participate in the protest action with members of Uasa, Numsa and Limusa.
