Press Statement dated 16 October 2018
The Public Servants Association (PSA) has welcomed the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to invite independent public institutions and legal experts to assist in identifying and selecting candidates for the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).
“The independence of the judiciary is key to any democracy and with the recent state capture and VBS scandals fresh in memory, the country needs the Director of Public Prosecutions not to regarded as a political appointment, but as someone who can act tough on crime, especially crime that impacts the economy and people of South Africa,” said PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks. “Having representatives from the General Council of the Bar of South Africa, the Law Society of South Africa, the Black Lawyers Association, and the Auditor-General of South Africa, amongst others, assisting Minister Jeff Radebe in this selection process, ensures that a new incumbent will be selected based on experience and not political affiliation, adding much-needed credibility,” said Mr Fredericks.
