Press Statement dated 16 November 2018
The Public Servants Association (PSA) as the largest affiliate supports the appeal by the Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) to government to grant the R3 billion guarantee that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has requested to save jobs and return the public broadcaster to operational viability.
About 900 jobs could be lost owing to past irregular expenditure amounting to billions. “The PSA’s main concern is how the lives of workers will be affected should the retrenchment go ahead. In the current economic climate, job security is crucial, and the country cannot afford to risk unemployment rates rising even higher,” said PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks.
Fedusa believes turn-around strategies should include plans to recover SABC monies that were lost through corruption and unauthorised expenditure. “The PSA is always in support of people taking responsibility and held accountable for their actions. Any investigation that will lead to the state entity recouping the maximum amount lost will be a victory. Furthermore, screws on corporate governance in state entities should be tightened,” said Mr Fredericks.
