Press Statement dated 16 November 2018
The Public Servants Association (PSA) supports the march in Pretoria on 17 November 2018 by unions against job losses at Eskom and coal mines.
On 30 October 2018, the Statistician-General released the third-quarter results on South Africa’s unemployment data for 2018, indicating a rise in unemployment to a concerning 27.5%. It is expected that about 92 000 jobs will be lost owing to the renewable energy programme, the Independent Power Producer Project (IPP).
“The PSA as a Union that represent more than 240 000 public-sector employees, is an advocate for job security and job creation. With unemployment increasing, further job losses will be catastrophic. Plans need to be in place to moderate and lessen the damaging effects on workers. Despite the country having to move with the times and new technology, this should not leave behind workers,” said PSA General Manager, Ivan Fredericks.
